Only One Earth World Environment Day 2022

World Environment Day was celebrated in Port Moresby through the global theme for 2022, “Only One Earth.” Several programs were implemented throughout the city for World Environment Day for the purpose of creating awareness regarding actions that can be taken to protect our environment.

Over 300 students from both private and public schools at the primary and secondary level attended The Amazing Port Moresby World Environment Day Exhibition. The event was held at Apec Haus. Several of the students prepared and presented climate action-themed poetry.

A total of 14 booths were displayed during the Amazing Port Moresby World Environment Day Exhibition. The exhibition consisted of various exhibitor categories: school projects, NGOs, government agencies and the private sector.

In addition to the booth displays there was an environmentally themed children’s art corner where children could artistically express their thoughts on ways to protect the planet. Creative dance performances were also a part of the Amazing Port Moresby World Environment Day Exhibition where six dance groups, who were the semifinalists from the One Earth Dance Competition performed throughout the day.

All of the students who attended the exhibition were invited to watch the documentary, “A Plastic Ocean.” A panel discussion moderated by Youth Environmental Activist Vinzealhar Nen followed for deeper discussion and interaction. During the afternoon session Miss Scuba Dive, Serena Paul also joined the panel discussion as an additional moderator.

The following day, the World Environment Day events continued at Ela Beach. Here, there were SME market vendors, arts and crafts for children and a stage erected where the One Earth Dance Competition semifinalists also performed. The event was attended by the general public. The World Environment Day celebrations were enjoyed by city residents and created awareness on a practical and engaging level for people of all ages.
